As stuck as you might be, you can always take a small step and make a positive effort, now, that might have you looking back on today as The Day Everything Began To Change. Decay is in the nature of things, and if it’s a sad fact when applied to one’s complexion or the sacred realm of car maintenance, it’s sometimes to be celebrated too. The world isn’t conspiring against you, it’s just going along, and in small ways at least it is no match for your wanton exercise of your freedom.
Use the options that you do have to give yourself a bit of positive momentum. Here are four small things you can do today to set yourself on a better, more active, freer path:
1) Find a mentor. If you come across a website created by a person who has more knowledge than you on a subject in which you’re interested, slowly start a dialogue with that person. Forums are another great place to meet experts on obscure subjects. Google blogsearch is an outstanding place to start.
2) Brainstorm online small business opportunities. Look, there are a obviously a lot of get-rich-quick schemes offered by people who might be perfectly happy using your cash to further their own personal get-rich-quick scheme! But there are also many, many sites where people give away life-changing ideas for free. One of the purposes of Wagefreedom.com is to find and review sites like this. The best of them provide both concrete methods and inspiration.
3) Peruse job sites and don’t be afraid to send out resumes in response to opportunities that sound interesting. You do this without jeopardizing your present job, and unless you are ecstatic about ‘going to work’ each day you owe it to yourself to do this. (By the way, if you are ecstatic about going to work I sincerely applaud you for doing something that fits you.)
4) Use the net to explore frivolous, ridiculous dreams. Always dreamed of having a small loft in Paris? Just how much does that beach shack in Costa Rica or Thailand cost? When we lack details about alternate directions, the status quo goes unthreatened. With the internet, never in history has it been easier to fill in some blanks about living these ‘alternate directions’ because lots of people have put themselves in a thousand interesting places and situations already, and many of them are happy to share. If you have further questions don’t hesitate contacting them: when they finally come in from surfing there in Costa Rica, they might very well answer you!
The overarching theme here is to create or reinforce the habit of exploring the outside surfaces of what your life happens to be at present. I put it that way because there is value in seeing the particulars of your life as usually more arbitrary, and less a product of your intentions, than you might be used to doing. You might be less likely to cling to parts of your life that you fell into, or were born into… It might be easier to ‘go’ (metaphorically) if there is less real reason to cling.
Make it a policy to ‘be looking’ because landscapes change faster than ever nowadays and better situations naturally do arise. The only danger is that continually admitting that you might be happier in another situation might actually lead to transformation, large or small. The shock of this decreases as you make more room in your life for Improvement itself.
You’d trade at least some aspects of today’s situation for improvement, wouldn’t you? Examining and acting upon choices that you do have is the first step to journeys you can’t yet imagine.
