I too was in similar situations and made similar choices as well, and to me they were the right choices for myself and my family. You do have to have the drive and the want for many of the contract positions, and in the end it is only you that can make the correct choices. You do have to make some sacrifices at the beginning of this process, but as you have, I believe I am far better off now. Maybe we have even shared a few of these choices in life, or even worked on the same projects. :-) Mike I completely understand your comments and decision making you have done over the years.
